Safe top hook: Gamakatsu Hump Back

Safe top hook: Gamakatsu Hump Back

By Saron Debets

The Hump Back gets its name from its curved shank. Unlike a hook with a straight shank, the Hump Back turns automatically straight towards the lower lip thanks to its special shape, making it a fast penetrating hook. It belongs in my favourites and can always be found in my tackle box.

Humpback 1
The special curved shank improves turning.

The Hump Back has a flat forged curved shank making it stronger and more firm. Playing a fish hard is no problem for this powerful hook.

Humpback 2
Profile of the hook.

Thanks to the micro-barbed tip there is less resistance when hooking and will therefore penetrate faster and deeper. It also ensures unhooking the fish is easier and reduces damage to the mouth.

Humpback 3
This is the way I like to fish the Hump Back.

I like to use the Hump Back especially on heavy pressured waters. I extend the hook with a small piece of shrink tube in order to let it turn and hook even faster.
